The Falcons - I Can’t Help It

The Falcons were a vocal group who at different times featured such greats as Wilson Pickett and Eddie Floyd. This track kills.

Lady Squalor Radio Show #3 with guest Holly Calder (Eyes Wide Open/Double Sight Weekender)

D: I am so happy to have had Holly Calder of Eyes Wide Open on last night’s (newly) 2 hour show, sharing sounds of the sixties, Garage, Psych, Fuzz, Freakbeat, and Power Rock; with her putting forward tunes from the U.K. and me from Canada.

I have yet to listen back to all of it, so the only thing that needs noted thus far from yesterday’s show is that I misspeak a few times in my initial block of chat where I use Ontario, the province which Ottawa is in, but don’t specify that the less kind words were about Ottawa, until a minute in. I like Ontario, it is my birthplace and where I happily grew up, I just have never gotten into Ottawa aside from the music recorded, but am sure loads of other people would tell you otherwise.

Enjoy the tunes, there are many this time. All the UK stuff is mixed by Holly and all of the Canada sets are done by me, the last bit was back to back.

Lil’ Hardin Armstrong- You Shall Reap What You Sow (1937)

D: Here is one of my favourite of Lill’ Hardin’s songs. In the Jazz world I think she is a really important figure. Here’s why…

“Lil Hardin Armstrong (February 3, 1898 — August 27, 1971) was a jazz pianist, composer, arranger, singer, and bandleader, and the second wife of Louis Armstrong with whom she collaborated on many recordings in the 1920s.” Though I should note that this song was actally written by Alexander Robinson.

The Jive Bombers- Bad Boy (1956)

D: This was my favourite tune that Duncan Harvey (Button Up/Different Strokes) played at our Soul Supper Club last night. This version with this title was recorded in 1956. But other versions were done by different people as early as 1936 (Lil’ Armstrong’s Brown Gal) and the same group recorded a something more similar to this one posted, under different band and song title earlier than this release. I love how the lead uses his vocals as an instrument.
